Brockwell Park Festivals Will Go Ahead Despite High Court Setback

Despite a High Court ruling against Lambeth Council’s extended festival use, events like Field Day, Wide Awake, and Mighty Hoopla will proceed with a revised plan.

Brockwell Park Festivals Will Go Ahead Despite High Court Setback

London’s iconic Brockwell Park will still host some of the city’s biggest festivals this year — including Field Day, Wide Awake, and Mighty Hoopla — despite a recent High Court ruling that challenged their legal approval.

Court Ruling Calls Out “Irrational” Planning Decisions

A local residents' group, Protect Brockwell Park, had challenged Lambeth Council’s decision to extend the park’s use for festival events. The High Court sided with the campaigners, describing the council’s 37-day usage approval (including set-up and breakdown) as “irrational,” since it bypassed the usual 28-day limit that would trigger the need for planning permission.

Revised Plan Paves the Way

In response, Lambeth Council and festival organizers submitted a revised plan using permitted development rights. The new application proposes a condensed 24-day period to stay within legal bounds — ensuring the show goes on, legally and logistically.

Festivals Unfazed, Culture Prevails

Organizers at Brockwell Live, the team behind the festivals, reassured fans and artists alike that events would proceed as scheduled. They emphasized their commitment to preserving the park’s environment and acknowledged the cultural and economic value these events bring to the community.

Residents Remain Divided

The ongoing situation has sparked local debate. Some residents are concerned about noise, park wear-and-tear, and limited access during event weeks. Others, however, defend the festivals as vital cultural moments that draw tourism, boost the local economy, and bring communities together.

The Summer Soundtrack is Safe

So, whether you're prepping for Peggy Gou at Field Day, getting weird at Wide Awake, or reliving Y2K nostalgia at Mighty Hoopla — rest easy. Brockwell Park is still your playground this summer.
