Xfer Records Unveils Serum 2: Elevating Synthesis to New Heights

In a groundbreaking release, Xfer Records has launched Serum 2, the highly anticipated successor to its renowned wavetable synthesizer. This update transforms Serum into a versatile multi-engine synth, integrating a spectrum of new features that cater to both seasoned producers and budding sound designers.

Expanded Oscillator Engines
Serum 2 transcends traditional wavetable synthesis by introducing a variety of oscillator types:

  • Multisample Oscillator: Enables replication of authentic instrument sounds, offering a rich library of real instruments recorded globally, including orchestral ensembles, choirs, pianos, and guitars. Users can also import custom instruments using multisample recordings in the sfz file format.

  • Sample Oscillator: Goes beyond basic sample playback, supporting FM, phase distortion, and various distortion types. It features advanced looping with snap detection, flexible loop modulation, rate control for 'tape stop' effects, and real-time sample slicing with score extraction and playback.

  • Granular Oscillator: Introduces sophisticated granular synthesis capabilities, allowing users to experiment creatively and breathe new life into existing samples.

  • Spectral Oscillator: Allows real-time resynthesis of samples at the harmonic level, with transient detection processing similar to advanced time-stretching algorithms, enabling radical manipulation of time and frequencies.

Enhanced Modulation and Effects
The modulation system in Serum 2 has been significantly upgraded:

  • LFO Shapes: Now includes various modes, such as path, two chaos modes, and a sample & hold generator. The path mode allows users to draw complex modulation paths on an XY pad, offering intricate sound-shaping possibilities.

  • Effects Routing: Features a new mixing section with dedicated channels for each oscillator, filter, bus, and main section, providing flexible effects routing and a more intuitive mixing workflow.

  • Arpeggiator and Sequencer: Introduces a sophisticated arpeggiator and clip sequencer with 12 slots for storing patterns or settings. Users can draw steps traditionally, select preset patterns, or import MIDI files, enhancing creative sequencing capabilities.

Availability and Pricing
Serum 2 is available at an introductory price of $189 until June 1, 2025, after which it will be priced at $249. In a commendable move, Xfer Records offers this substantial update as a free upgrade for existing Serum 1 users. The plugin is compatible with 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats on macOS (High Sierra or later for Intel, Big Sur or later for Apple Silicon) and Windows (Windows 10 and above). A demo version is also available, limited to 15-minute sessions.

Conclusion
Serum 2 represents a significant leap in software synthesis, expanding upon its predecessor's capabilities with a host of new features and enhancements. Its diverse oscillator engines, advanced modulation options, and user-friendly interface solidify its position as a powerhouse in the realm of digital synthesizers.
