Remembering Grant Jackson: Detroit’s Underground Connector Passes at 35

Detroit’s electronic music community has lost one of its brightest grassroots leaders. Grant Jackson—a genre-hopping DJ, boundary-breaking promoter, and authentic voice of the underground—has passed away at the age of 35, leaving behind a legacy of inclusivity, grit, and soul.

A Selector Without Borders

Grant wasn’t the kind of DJ who chased clout or charts. He started in the dubstep trenches back in the late 2000s, throwing parties that pulsed with raw energy and Detroit edge. But his sound evolved fast—blending disco, drum & bass, jazzy house, and weird funk into sets that didn’t just move feet but shifted atmospheres.

He believed in the power of a dancefloor to change lives. And he curated each moment like it mattered—because to him, it did.

Taco Tuesdays & Late-Night Magic

One of his most enduring contributions was the iconic “Taco Tuesdays” series—low-key but legendary sessions hosted at spots like UFO Bar and TV Lounge. These weren’t just gigs; they were community hubs. Nights where the tacos were hot, the beats were deep, and the vibes were real.

Regulars didn’t just come for the music—they came for the Grant experience. Unpretentious, open-armed, always smiling behind the booth.

Honoring a Life, Celebrating a Spirit

Grant passed on May 2, 2025. He is survived by his son, Jacob, and a massive extended family of artists, dancers, and Detroit lifers who saw him as a brother.

Two memorials will honor his life:

  • May 7: A private gathering at his family home in Northville.

  • May 11: A community BBQ hosted by Spkrbox, a venue that had become one of Grant’s creative homes.

In lieu of flowers, the community is supporting a fund for Jacob’s education—a way to pass on Grant’s legacy of love and leadership to the next generation.

More Than a DJ

Grant Jackson wasn’t just behind the decks—he was behind the culture. He empowered new talent, booked artists who needed that first chance, and built a scene where everybody was welcome. He didn’t just play tracks—he created trust. He didn’t just start parties—he started movements.

And even now, as we mourn, the speakers still hum with his energy. His groove is etched into the fabric of the city.
